Paula VanderMeer, 67, of Crete, passed away Thursday, October 13th at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Buffalo, New York to the late Robert and Dorothea Young. Paula is survived by her beloved husband of 44 years, Louis VanderMeer; her loving daughter, Amanda (Brian) Sokol; Cherished grandchildren, Edwin and Lily Sokol; Devoted sister, Lisa Shapiro; and many nieces and nephews. Paula was an active parishioner at St. Liborius Church in Steger where she was a former Religious Ed teacher, a Eucharistic Minister, and a volunteer for many other activities of the church. She was also a volunteer and a Team Leader at Relay For Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society in Northwest Indiana. She supported many, many charities especially the Mercy Home and St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital. Her big smile, kind heart, willingness to help, and her deep faith will be greatly missed by all who knew her! In keeping with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23rd, 12:00 – 3:00 PM at Skyline Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, 24800 S. Governors Highway in Monee. Family and friends are to meet at St. Liborius Church, 71 W. 35th Street in Steger on Monday, October 24th, at 10:00 AM for a Funeral Mass. Private interment will take place at Skyline Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Masses in Paula’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
